On his drive back to Houston, Gus called Clyde and woke him out of a sound sleep. “Dude, do you know what time it is?” he growled.

“Somewhere around 3 a.m. I guess,” Gus said.

“Don’t you ever sleep? What do you want now?”

“I was just wondering if you had any friends on the net who could help set up a new identity for someone.”

“You found our girl?”

“Yes and I need to make her invisible fast. Can you help me with that?” Gus asked.

“Now you’re talking, man. Give me 24 hours and I’ll have her hidden deeper than Elvis. You do know that he’s still alive, don’t you? I figure he’s living it up on some exotic island, laughing at all of us.”

“Clyde, you’ve always been delusional, but I love you anyway. Call me when you’ve got it set up.”

It was almost 5 a.m., when Gus opened the door to his apartment and collapsed on his bed. Four hours later, he was sitting behind his desk at the precinct, working on his third cup of coffee when the call came in. Dr. Griswald had been found dead in her apartment. A rush of panic shot through his body. He grabbed his cell phone, ran out the front door and called John Jackson.

“Is Carla alright?” He asked the second John answered.

“Yes, she fine, she’s here with me. Why? What’s wrong?” he asked.

“John, listen to me carefully. You’ve got to move Carla right now, right this second. Jane Griswald was killed last night. It had to be Doss and if he forced her to talk before he killed her, he knows everything. We can’t take any chances. Get her out of there, now. I’ll call his clerk to see if he’s holding court today, if he’s not… he could be in Tyler now.”

Gus placed a call to Judge Doss’ clerk and was relieved to hear that he was in session and would be there all day. It still didn’t answer the provocative question in his gut. Did Jane Griswald talk before she died? Could she have endured his horrible torture without talking? Did Doss know about him and where he’d taken Carla?

His cell phone rang. “We’re out of the house, where do you want us to go?” John Jackson asked.

“Is your wife with you?” Gus asked.

“Yes, we’re all here.”

“Good. I want you to drive to Dallas, to the DFW airport and take the next available flight to Colorado Springs. When you get there, check into a hotel near the airport. Use a different name and pay with cash. I’ll meet you there tomorrow.”

“Colorado Springs? What’s there?”

“I think I know a place where Carla will be safe.”

Gus hung up and dialed the phone again. “Darrel, it’s me, Gus.”

“Hey buddy, what’s up?” he said.

“I hate to do this, but I can’t think of anything else. I’m sorry, Darrel, but I really need your help.”

“With what? What’s wrong, Gus?”

“Remember the hypothetical thirteen year old girl I told you about?”

“Yeah, in fact, that story has been haunting me ever since you told me about her.
